Camarillo, Calif. Semtech Corp. has expanded its MicroClamp product line with the introduction of its new μClamp3304A, a 3.3-V electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection device, for next-generation cell phones, PDAs, notebook computers, and digital cameras. The new device is housed in an ultra-small SC-89 package that is pin compatible with 5-V protection devices, which simplifies design-in for systems transitioning from 5-V devices.
The μClamp3304A device's SC-89 package is one of the smallest multi-line packages available, measuring 1.7 x 1.7 x 0.6 mm. It can be dropped into designs that previously used either an SOT-666- or SC-89-based 5-V device, resulting in a more reliable solution for systems operating at sub-5 volts, according to the company.
The μClamp3304A protects up to four lines, features low leakage current for longer battery life, and a low clamping voltage range for increased protection. The new device meets ESD protection to IEC 61000-4-2 (±15 kV for air, ±8 kV for contact) and EFT protection for data lines to IEC 61000-4-4 (5/50 ns).
Constructed using Semtech's patented EPD TVS process technology, it yields true 3.3 operating voltages as well as low capacitance. The new device is rated for less than 30 pF of capacitance, enabling its use on higher speed lines such as keypads, LEDs, and multimedia card interfaces used in cellular handsets.
The lead-free design meets the European Union's Restriction on Hazardous Substances (RoHS) directive.
Available now in production quantities, the μClamp3304A is priced at $0.28 each in quantities of 1,000. The ordering code is uClamp3304A.TCT. Samples and evaluation kits are available.
