Sunnyvale, Calif.Maxim Integrated Products has added 11 general-purpose input/output (GPIO) and LED drivers to its portfolio of serial-bus-controller products.
The 8- and 16-port devices, with part numbers from MAX7319 to MAX7329, support hot insertion and operate with a 400-KHz, I²C 2-wire serial interface. They have 0.6-microamp typical standby current, 6V over-voltage protection, and operate from a wide 1.71-V to 5.5-V supply voltage over the -40°C to +125°C automotive temperature range.
Since the I/O expanders are software compatible, any combination of the 8- and 16-port devices can be used together for applications requiring more I/Os such as in the computing, communication, consumer, industrial and medical sectors.
The devices feature low-power consumption to help extend battery life in mobile applications such as cell phones, PDAs, mobile computers, and satellite radios. Used to provide general I/O expansion, the products can drive display and keypad backlights, function and status indicators, RGB fun lights, and battery- and signal-strength indicator LEDs.
They also offer interrupt and reset functions for data-sensitive server, router, and SAN/NAS applications. The hardware interrupt output enables the user to monitor changes at the selected inputs. The reset input will void any bus transaction, forcing the device into a STOP condition.
The products are offered as input only, push-pull output only, and as various configurations of multiple I/O combinations. Outputs are either push-pull (PP) for source and sink capability and faster rise time, or open drain (OD). An external pull-up resistor lets the OD outputs level shift the logic-high to lower or higher than the supply voltage. The OD outputs can also be configured as inputs and set to selectable power-up default levels.
The MAX7328 and MAX7329 are 8-port second sources to the PCF8574 and PCF8574A, respectively. The MAX7319 and MAX7320 are 8-port input and
PP output only, respectively. The MAX7321 offers the flexibility that all eight I/Os can be configured as either inputs or OD outputs. The MAX7322 has four inputs and four PP outputs. The MAX7323's four I/Os can be configured as inputs or OD outputs. The MAX7323 also has four PP outputs.
The MAX7324/MAX7325/MAX7326/MAX7327 are 16-port versions of the
8-port devices. Each of these devices has at least 8 PP outputs equivalent and software-compatible to the MAX7319-MAX7323.
Prices start at 98 cents each for 8-port and $1.34 for 16-port devices in 1,000-unit quantities.
