San Diego, Calif. Pulse, a Technitrol Company, has added a new line to its family of through-hole, shielded, shaped-core power inductors. Designed for PC motherboard and server markets, the new PG0322NL series is designed for use in voltage regulator modules (VRMs), dc/dc converters, and point of load applications.
A key feature of the PG0322NL series is that it's designed with a ferrite core material instead of iron powder typically used in existing motherboard inductor solutions. Upshot: The ferrite core material offers 60 percent less core loss, resulting in low power use and less heat generation. In addition, the ferrite core also eliminates the risk of thermal aging core failures, said the company.
The PG0322NL inductors offer a high heating current rating of 32 A to 60 A and a high current saturation capability from 30 A to 50 A, which is suitable for high current, multi-phase buck converter applications. The operating temperature range is -40° to 130°C, providing power supply design engineers with enough margin for thermal derating particularly for high ambient temperature applications.
Other key specifications include a wide open circuit inductance (OCL), ranging from 0.28 to 1.20 microhenries (μH), which gives engineers a choice in the inductance value for the smallest ripple current and fastest system transient response. The low direct current resistance (DCR) ranges from 0.60 to 1.65 milliohms (mΩ) and yields higher system efficiency due to lower copper losses. Both the OCL and DCR have tight tolerances of ±15 percent and ±8 percent, respectively, allowing for more accurate current sensing in systems using the inductor as the current sense element, according to the company.
With a package height of 9.5 mm, the PG0322NL power cube inductors can fit underneath the processor heat sink. In addition, the 14.5 x 14.5-mm footprint minimizes board space. These inductors are RoHS compliant and meet the EIA481 standard. Click here for the datasheet.
