Sunnyvale, Calif. With the ability to manage up to six functions with a single control wire, the AAT4296 and AAT4298 I/O devices from Advanced Analogic Technologies Inc. allow designers to quickly expand general purpose input/output (GPIO) resources in battery-power systems.
The AAT4296 features five push/pull outputs and the AAT4298 offers six.
"As portable system designers develop new versions of their core design to serve different market segments, they often need to add new features and functions, but find their original controller has limited GPIO resources," said Erik Ogren, product marketing manager for Analogic Tech, in a statement. "With the AAT4296 and AAT4298, designers can control these additional functions without altering their original platform."
The state of each independent push/pull channel is controlled with one GPIO through the EN/SET pin using the company's proprietary Simple Serial Control interface, which requires a string of pulses followed by a 500-µs latch time.
Both devices can facilitate voltage level shifting as they operate over a 1.8-V to 5-V input range with an EN/SET voltage input level of 1.4-V. The I/O expanders consume 3-µA quiescent current typical.
The AAT4296 is immediately available in an 8-pin, 2-mm X 2.2-mm SC70JW package for 85 cents each in 1,000-unit quantities. The AAT4298 comes in a 12-pin, 3.0-mm X 2.85-mm TSOPJW package for 92 cents in 1,000-piece orders.
