Fullerton, Calif.—BI Technologies' Model 7720 family of power-factor-correction (PFC) modules offers design engineers a convenient way to add boost-type power factor correction to their switching power supplies. The low-profile modules range from 500 watts to 3 kW (heatsink required). A ready-to-run evaluation board/design tool is also available to test the designs.
"The Model 7720 Series are the most compact power factor correction modules available, and they contain all power components necessary to implement power factor correction for a switching power supply," said Mike Ochoa-Hougan, product manager for Hybrid Microcircuits. "The single-module approach allows design engineers to eliminate many thermal and mechanical mounting issues, as well as the difficulty of selecting the proper FET and diode combinations for an effective, efficient and compact design."
The 7720 Series module is designed to replace up to ten TO-220/TO-247 discrete power semiconductors used for power-factor-correction in a conventional power supply design. The modules are available in three standard configurations. The Model 7720-1A is for power supplies from 1.5 to 3 kW (600-volt, 25-amp rectifier and 500-volt, 0.1-watt MOSFET). The Model 7720-2A is suited to power supplies rated at 1 to 2.25 kW (same rated rectifier and a 500-volt, 0.3-watt MOSFET). The Model 7720-3A is for power supplies from 500 watts to 1.5 kW (600-volt, 18-amp rectifier and 500-volt, 0.2- watt MOSFET).
The PFC evaluation board offered by the company contains all necessary control and power circuitry and an inductor assembled onto a compact board. Providing correction to near unity power-factor and better than 95 percent efficiency, the board can be used to evaluate a wide variety of applications, including switching power supplies, motor drives, servo amplifiers, solenoid drivers, solid state relays and three-phase rectifier bridges.
The modules, with a footprint of 1.38 by 2.23 inches (and just 0.2 inch high) and rated for operation over -40 to +125°C, are priced starting at under $20 in volume. Lead time is from stock to 12 weeks. The evaluation board is $199.
