Baltimore, Maryland—Saft's Intensium 3 is a
self-contained, 48-volt lithium-ion battery system for telecom power backup. The hot-pluggable unit, suited for 19-inch, 3U rack-mounted applications, has a capacity of 2.2 kW-h. The systems currently available to customers feature a volumetric energy density of 136 Wh/l, surpassing most advanced valve regulated
lead-acid (VRLA) designs. They require no maintenance and are self-monitoring.
Intensium 3 modules comprise 14 of the company's VL cylindrical lithium-ion cells. For maximum performance, life and safety, this design uses a nickel-based positive active material, doped with aluminium and cobalt.
Intensium 3 has a projected 10-year life at +40°C. It has a 20-year life at +20°C. The system is rated for operation over -25 to +60°C.
A three-level design for redundancy checks on component failure and environmentally harsh conditions. The design includes circuitry to check on battery system level, a separate electronic board at the 7-cell pack level, and current-breaker devices on
Intensium is scaleable, allowing users to connect up to eight units in parallel to provide 18 kW-h of backup. The plug n'play system features remote communication (CANbus, dry-contact) interfaces to facilitate information transfer on state of charge, general battery condition and environmental state (temperature). An LED readout provides visual feedback.
