Sunnyvale, Calif.Spansion LLC is sampling a 64-Mbit flash device with a serial peripheral interface (SPI) for $2.50 in 10,000-unit quantities.
The S25FL064A device is based on Spansion's two-bit-per-cell MirrorBit technology, giving it a read speed of 50-MHz for faster boot times on embedded products. The S25FL064A device requires a 3-V (2.7 V to 3.6 V) power supply for both read and write functions. It consists of 128 sectors, each with 512-Kbit memory.

"By offering this high-density SPI product, Spansion enables a broader segment of the embedded market to take advantage of this emerging low-cost serial interface, while also bringing a trusted name and high-volume supply to customers."
SPI devices read information serially, or one bit at a time, requiring fewer connections and thus fewer pins. The interface is designed to help lower cost, simplify board layout and reduce the form factor of embedded designs. The technology is already gaining acceptance in a variety of embedded applications like optical and hard disk drives, WLAN and DSL cards and routers, PC BIOS, DVD/CD players and recorders, and other consumer electronics devices, according to the company.
The S25FL064A is housed in a 16-pin SOIC lead-free package that is RoHS-compliant, or based on standard materials. Production volume is expected later this year.
