Malvern, Penna.—Accenting simpler and lower-cost designs, Vishay Intertechnology's high-voltage SiP12201 and low-voltage SiP12202 synchronous buck step-down controller ICs will (with external MOSFETs) deliver up to 10 amps for telecom and industrial end systems. Operating efficiency is as high as 93 percent to extend battery life in portable applications and minimize heat generation in enclosed field-mounted and rack-mounted systems.
Delivering an adjustable 0.6 to 20 volt output from a 4.2 to 26 volt input, the SiP12201 is suited to industrial controls, wireless and cable modems, set-top boxes, LCD TVs, telecom power supplies and servers, point-of-load (POL) modules, and for delivering regulated power to microprocessors, ASICs, FPGAs, and DSPs. Able to drive n-channel MOSFETs (e.g., Si7114DN) for both the high side and low side in a synchronous converter, the SiP12201 helps to reduce overall design costs by allowing the use of two lower-cost n-channel devices instead of one n-channel and one p-channel device. The SiP12201 also offers 500-kHz operation, which allows the use of smaller passive components in converter designs.
The SiP12202, delivering an adjustable 0.6 to 5.5 volts from a 2.7 to 5.5 volt input, is intended for power conversion in battery-powered electronics, as well as in notebook and desktop computers and a wide range of other systems using point-of-load and distributed power converters. The chip is able to operate as a
low dropout (LDO) regulator during low battery conditions by going to 100 percent duty cycle.
The SiP12202 drives an n-channel MOSFET on the low side and a p-channel MOSFET on the high side (e.g., Si7106DN p-channel and Si7110DN n-channel power MOSFETs). Use of the p-channel MOSFET on the high side eliminates the need for an external charge pump while also simplifying the high-side gate driver. High-frequency operation up to 500 kHz enables use of smaller passive components for more compact end systems.
Both controllers feature a combination compensation/shutdown pin, undervoltage lockout, power good output, output-current limit, and
thermal shutdown. Internal soft start prevents voltage spikes during startup.
The SiP12201's datasheet is available here, and here for the SiP12202. Samples and production quantities of the controllers are available now, with lead times of six to seven weeks for larger orders. Available in a lead (Pb)-free MLP33-10 package and rated for operation over -40 to +85°C, the SiP12202 is priced for U.S. delivery in 1,000-piece quantities at 82 cents each, and 80 cents for the SiP12202.
