MANHASSET, N.Y. Shipments of organic light emitting diode (OLED) displays grew to 16.7 million and revenues hit $130.9 million in the third quarter of 2005, according to market research firm DisplaySearch Inc.
The firm said OLED shipments increased 144 percent year-over-year due to 35 percent growth in MP3 player sales, and 93 percent growth in industrial displays. All of the growth remains in passive-matrix OLEDs using small molecule material; active-matrix OLED display shipments were under 50,000.
Samsung SDI paced third-quarter OLED unit shipments with 4.4 million and revenue with $37.1 million. Taiwan-based RiTDisplay ranked second in both shipments and revenue. Japan-based TDK experienced the strongest growth of the top five, with shipments rising 138 percent quarter-to-quarter to 1.2 million and revenue up 81 percent to $7.6 million.
