Schaumburg, Ill. Taiyo Yuden (U.S.A.) Inc. offers a new wirewound chip inductor series that is said to simplify designs, reduce part count and lower bill-of-material (BOM) costs by combining two devices into a single 3218-size package.
The new LB3218 wirewound chip inductors combine the functionality of two 3225-size low-resistance (RDC) and high-current inductors into a single 3218-size device. Measuring 3.2 x 1.8 x 1.8 mm, the LB3218 inductor is 40 percent smaller by volume and 20 percent thinner than larger 3225-size devices, resulting in a 30 percent smaller footprint.
The LB3218 series offers a wide range of inductance ratings from 1.0 to 330 microhenry (μH) at operating frequencies of 796 KHz to 7.96 MHz. The series also provides resistance values ranging from 0.05 to 6.5 ohms (Ω) and current ratings of 1,000 to 60 mA, respectively. Key specifications for individual LB3218 parts include:

Designed as a drop-in replacement for previous-generation Taiyo Yuden LEMF (low Rdc) and LEMC (high current) series inductors, the LB3218 facilitates manufacturability by using the same land pattern as before, thus eliminating any design modifications required for upgrading to the new LB3218 series parts, said the company. These smaller devices are suitable for power supply circuits used in digital still cameras, camcorders, VCRs and other mature commodity-type equipment formats in which it is difficult or impractical to implement new circuit designs, said the company.
With the LB3218 series, designers no longer have to choose between a low RDC inductor or a high-current model, said the company. The shape of the ferrite core, its thickness and the number of windings were specifically designed to eliminate all wasted space and to produce the highest possible rated current and lowest possible RDC in a 3218-size device. As with other Taiyo Yuden inductors, the new inductors provide non-polarized electrodes to simply manufacturability.
Sample price is $0.20 each. Delivery is two weeks.
