San Jose, Calif. OSRAM Opto Semiconductors Inc. has launched the newest addition to its Golden DRAGON family of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) specifically for automotive daytime running lights. The small surface-mount and rugged automotive LED doesn't require much headlight space and can withstand jolts and vibrations, said the company.
Leveraging the company's recently announced advanced thin-film technology that touts a high bright output and very low energy consumption, the Golden DRAGON LED offers a typical luminous flux of 64 lumens (lm) at 500 mA and an optical efficiency of 36 lm/W. The company said the color location falls within the permissible Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) specification, enabling the LEDs to be used in all headlights without restriction.
Housed in a white surface-mount package, the Golden DRAGON LED provides a power consumption rating of 2.2 W. It features a 120-viewing angle and an operating temperature range of -40°C to 100°C. The devices are lead free and RoHS compliant.
The OSRAM advanced thin-film chip technology is said to provide increased optical output, better optical coupling, lower forward voltages and improved thermal performance compared with previous chip construction. This new thin-film technology emits light at the surface of the chip with a built-in reflector, thereby increasing the usable light emitted from the chip, said the company.
The indium gallium nitride (ThinGaN) technology produces 64 lm from an operating current of 500 mA, which is a significant improvement over previous solutions. In addition, the forward voltage is reduced from 3.8 volts (V) to 3.2 V, reducing the power required and making it a suitable solution for specific exterior automotive headlight applications. In addition, the package, in combination with a special carrier material, ensures excellent heat dissipation, according to the company.
