Addison, TexasMil-aerospace board maker Thales is rolling out its first serial RapidIO VME PMC (PCI mezzanine card) product. Its existing dual 1-GHz Motorola PowerPC G4+ 7457 Altivec-equipped PPC74587 PowerNode3 single-board computer can now be serially interconnected through a PMC-RIO RapidIO switch fabric PCI mezzanine card. The card plugs into one of the PPC74587’s two PMC sites.
The PowerNode3 with switch fabric will let you interconnect computing nodes inside a large signal-processing system. The use of RapidIO reduces the pin-counts that would otherwise be needed in a parallel bus approach. The PMC-RIO mezzanine distributed switch also prevents any single point of failure.
What's more, the full mesh fabric, implemented as a distributed switch system, lets a switch grow with the number of nodes in a system. Thales claims there's no equivalent from any competitors.
In its full-duplex communications mode, RapidIO provides a low latency packet-based interconnect. Additionally, you get error management, and an architecture for reporting, and recovering from, transmission errors. The bundle of the PMC in the PPC74587 PowerNode 3 also provides both front connections and back connections.
The RapidIO switch fabric also supports an aggregate throughput of up to 1.6-Gbytes/s, thanks to a 400-Mbyte/s sustained peer-to-peer link bandwidth. That makes the bundled card system useful in realtime signal processing applications such as radar, sonar, and medical imaging.

Thales says it will ship this bundled card (one PowerNode3 featuring 512-Mbytes of memory, 32-Mbytes of flash, and the RapidIO PCI mezzanine card mounted and tested) via LRU integration tests, as a whole unit. The bundle will also include the Lynx 4.0 operating system, and eventually, VxWorks 6.2
Pricing for the bundled PowerNode 3 and PMC-RIO card starts at about $10,200.
