Phoenix—Designed for tight layouts, ON Semiconductor's NCP5603 charge pump IC can drive a high-power white LED for high brightness torch or flash applications for camera phones, or power several LEDs for general backlighting in other portable consumer electronic devices.
"With the NCP5603, ON Semiconductor is expanding its white LED driver portfolio, offering the first in a series of high efficiency charge pump-based solutions targeted at cell phone form factors that have critical space constraints," said Andy Williams, vice president of the Power Conversion Division. "This series offers engineers high efficiency charge pump solutions with maximum flexibility in terms of output current control, short circuit protection, highly accurate current matching for backlighting and camera flash, while house in small, low profile DFN packages."
The driver, working from a 2.7 to 5.5-volt input, delivers up to 350 mA (can drive a single 1-W white LED). The chip operates in the 1X, 1.5X and 2X modes appropriate to the available source voltage, and thus achieves up to 90 percent efficiency to maximize battery lifetime. The device also features a PWM/EN input, suitable for dimming applications.
The charge pump requires just two external ceramic capacitors. As such, this (inductorless) device can also serve as a cost-effective, space-saving boost DC/DC converter that supplies either 4.5 or 5 volts for applications such as biasing audio amplifier in cell phones, MP3 players or digital still cameras.
