Milpitas, Calif.—Touting a high degree of design flexibility, Intersil's ISL6420A PWM controller offers programmable switching frequency, programmable soft start, external compensation, a wide DC input (4-28 volts) to support a broad variety of applications, and two package choices.
The ISL6420A can operate over 100 kHz to 1.4 MHz (resistor selectable) and a full duty cycle (zero to 100 percent). Output voltage can be precisely regulated as low as 0.6 volt, with a tolerance of ±1 percent over temperature and line voltage variations. The chip's voltage-mode control architecture provides external compensation for added flexibility and fast transient response. Its Pgood port and an external capacitor monitors the output voltage and eliminates the need for an extra supervisory IC on the board.
This device's voltage tracking mode is suited to externally referenced buck converter applications and DDR (double data rate) termination supplies. Its voltage margining mode simplifies system testing in networking DC/DC converter applications. The chip's error amplifier features a 15 MHz gain-bandwidth product and slew rate of 6 V/microsecond for fast transient response. Protection features include over-voltage, over-current, under-voltage lock-out and over-temperature shutdown.
