Milpitas, Calif.—Intersil Corporation's family of PWM controllers for Intel VR11 applications claims the industry’s highest accuracy. Designed for CPU core multiphase buck DC/DC converters on desktop, workstation, server, and industrial PC motherboards as well as VRM applications, the ISL6306/07 family and external FET drivers provide 2-, 3-, 4-, 5-, or 6-phase operation.
"These VR11 PWM controllers are the industry’s first with integrated loadline and over-current protection (OCP) temperature compensation, enabling the designer to maintain the same current limit threshold over temperature without any increase in external components," said George Lakkas, senior product marketing manager of the Power Management group.
System accuracy is quoted at ±0.5 percent over load, line, and temperature variations, and over operating life.
The ISL6306/07 family drives up to six synchronous-rectified buck channels in parallel. The chips' multiphase buck converter architecture uses interleaved timing to cut filtering requirements.
The ISL6306 is optimized for desktop and embedded systems (4-phase PWM with 8-bit DAC). The ISL6307 family is optimized for servers and voltage regulator modules (VRMs). These devices (0.5 to 1.6 volts out, 6.25 mV per step) include the ISL6307 (6 phase, 8-bit VID); ISL6307A (ultrawide bandwidth, 2-6 phase, 8-bit VID, precision current sensing); and ISL6307B (6 phase, 8-bit VID, precision current sensing for applications in which supply voltage is higher than 5 volts).
The company also announced sampling of the ISL6326/27 VR11 controller family, which features a proprietary dual-edge pulse width modulation scheme that cuts output capacitor requirements. It claims the highest-performance-to-price ratio of any VR11 CPU core regulator. These chips are pin-for-pin compatible with the ISL6306/07 family. The members include the ISL6326 (4-phase device), the ISL6326B 4-phase with load current indicator), and the ISL6327 (6-phase).
