Schaumburg, Ill. Taiyo Yuden (U.S.A.), Inc. claims the industry's smallest wirewound chip inductors for signal line filters. Packaged in a 0806 case size (2 x 1.6 x 1.6 mm), the LBM2016 is 43 percent smaller by volume than equivalent-rated inductors typically used for these applications in products such as standard TVs, audio equipment, set-top boxes, and AV equipment.
The LBM2016 series inductors are available in 25 different part numbers. These include the LBM2016T1R0J with a 1.0 μH inductance value, ±5 percent tolerance, a 220 MHz self-resonant frequency (SRF), and 30 Quality (Q) factor; the LBM2016T4R7J with a 4.7 μH inductance, ±5 percent tolerance, 40 MHz SRF and 30 Q Factor; the LBM2016T100J with a 10 μH inductance, ±5 percent tolerance, 27 MHz SRF, and 25 Q Factor; LBM2016T150J with a 15 μH inductance, ±5 percent tolerance, 20 MHZ SRF and 25 Q Factor.
Signal line circuits incorporating an inductor and capacitor are used to isolate specific signal frequencies, and requires inductors with a higher Q factor (The higher the Q value the more effectively it operates as a filter.) and narrower inductance tolerance than the type of power inductors typically used in dc/dc converter choke coils and IC input power circuits, explained the company. By adapting this same technology to LBM2016 signal line inductors, the company was able to reduce the chip size while retaining the high Q factor and narrow inductance tolerance of previous signal line inductors.
The company also said it optimized the material compound ratios of the outer covering, as well as redesigned the ferrite core, thickness and number of windings to eliminate all wasted space and to optimize performance. The LBM2016 inductors offer non-polarized electrodes that simplify manufacturability by allowing the device to be mounted right side up, regardless of orientation.
Current volume production for the LBM2016 wirewound chip inductors is three million units per month, with production expected to reach 10 million units by summer. Sample pricing is $0.20 each. Delivery is two weeks.
