Milpitas. Calif.—With the focus on maintaining high DC/DC efficiency and saving yet more real estate, Linear Technology's LTC3210, a 1x/1.5x/2x multimode charge pump for cellphone displays, delivers up to 500 mA for four 25 mA LEDs in the main display and 400 mA for the camera LED.
The LTC3210, working at 800 kHz and up to 95 percent overall efficiency at an operating voltage of 3.1 V, requires just four small (external) capacitors, and two resistors to independently set maximum current in the individual displays. Total footprint for the solution is less than 20 mm2.
Each display is digitally controlled with independent dimming and programming via a single wire interface. The chip features a 64:1 brightness control range for the main display, and 8-level brightness for the camera output. The chip carries open/short LED protection.
