San Jose, Calif. Pericom Semiconductor Corp. targets portable electronic applications with its SaRonix S1643 and S1644 series of quartz crystal clock oscillators that are housed in an ultra-miniature 3.2 x 2.5-mm package.
These S1643 and S1644 oscillators, manufactured at Pericom's recently acquired eCERA factory in Taiwan, offer operating frequencies from 1.8432 to 106.25 MHz with 3.3 V and 2.5 V LVCMOS interfaces. Common operating frequencies include 1.8432, 3.0720, 3.6864, 10, 20, 24, 25, 27, 40, 48, 50, 75, 100, and 106.25 MHz.
Aimed at high-density or portable electronic applications, the S1643 and S1644 products are packaged in a hermetically sealed 3.2 x 2.5-mm ceramic package that is 75 percent smaller than the popular 7 x 5-mm package. This small package helps reduce the size of end products or enables the addition of more features/functions to existing platforms.
Brandon Ogilvie, product marketing manager for Pericom, said the company breaks new ground by incorporating both a crystal resonator and an integrated clock circuit (clock IC) into this ultra-miniature package.
The S1643/44 clock oscillators use AT-cut quartz to produce a specified output clock signal between 1.8432 and 106.25 MHz. The crystals use a non-PLL clock circuit to achieve low output jitter and low current consumption that is rated from 8 mA maximum (up to 50 MHz) and 15 mA maximum (up to 106.25 MHz). These products achieve a ±25 ppm total accuracy over the commercial operating range and ±50 ppm total accuracy over industrial operating conditions, making them suitable for wireless applications such as GPS, Bluetooth, WiFi, GSM, and WiMax.

Applications include small form-factor hard disk drives, GPS devices, portable multimedia players or recorders, digital cameras, blade servers, switches and routers, portable/personal computing devices, wireless access devices, PON and SOHO networking equipment.
Prices start around $1.10 each in quantities of 1,000, depending on specifications. Delivery is from stock to ten weeks. They are now available for initial samples and prototype requirements.
