San Jose, Calif.Cypress Semiconductor Corp. has introduced a high-speed USB 2.0 transceiver that is optimized for Intel Corp.'s Monahans processor family that is based on the third-generation Intel XScale architecture.
The MoBL-USB TX2 transceiver is compliant with the UTMI (USB 2.0 Transceiver Macrocell Interface) standard, and is approved for the Monahans Platform Development Kit.
The MoBL-USB TX2 transceiver is offered in a 56-ball VFBGA (very fine pitch ball grid array) package that measures 5-mm x 5-mm with 0.5-mm ball pitch. It also offers a suspend current of 15 micro amps. The device is suitable for battery-powered applications such as mobile phones, PDAs, smart phones, portable media players (PMP), and handheld global positioning systems (GPS).
"We are excited to have the new Cypress MoBL-USB TX2 transceiver optimized for the Monahans platform family to help drive the next generation of handsets and mobile devices," said Mark Casey, general manager of Intel's applications processors business unit, in a statement. "High speed USB is the interconnect of choice for moving multi-media content and data and provides a rewarding user experience in these next generation applications."
The MoBL-USB TX transceiver supports both USB 2.0 high-speed (480 Mbits/s) and full-speed (12 Mbits/s) data rates and supports USB 2.0 test modes. It offers serial-to-parallel and parallel-to-serial conversions; 8-bit unidirectional, 8-bit bidirectional, or 16-bit bidirectional external data interface; synchronous field and EOP detection on receive packets, and generation on transmit packets; and data and clock recovery from the USB serial stream. It also features bit stuffing/unstuffing, bit stuff error detection, staging register to manage data rate variations, as well as 16-bit 30-MHz, and 8-bit 60-MHz parallel interfaces.
The MoBL-USB TX2 transceiver (CY7C68000A) is expected to sample in May and ship in production volumes in June 2006. In addition to the 56-ball VFBGA, the device is offered in a 56-lead QFN package. Pricing in 10K volumes starts at $1.49.
