Santa Clara, Calif. The USB 2.0 host controller, part number uPD720102, marks the second device in NEC Electronics Corp.'s ECOUSB family of USB devices that comply with the RoHs environmental directive.
The uPD720102 has been enhanced with buffer memory and circuits that have been optimized for system-memory access, helping to reduce the gap between packets of data. As a result, the uPD720102 host controller can transmit data at speeds approaching 33-Mbytes/s, or almost two gigabytes (GB) per minute, which is up to 30 percent faster than the current industry-leading host controller, according to NEC.
The data-transmission rate represents a nearly 50 percent improvement over NEC Electronics' previous-generation host controller, the uPD720101. Internal clock signals and an on-chip 1.5-V voltage regulator enable power consumption levels of 65 milliamperes (mA) during data transmission and 100 microamperes during idle time.
The power consumption rates in both active and idle modes represent more than a 50 percent improvement over the uPD720101 device, NEC said. The number of ports in NEC Electronics' latest ECOUSB device has been reduced to three compared to the previous five-port design.
The uPD720102 host controller is available in a 120-pin plastic TQFP, 14-mm x 14-mm package. The device integrates a 1.5-V internal voltage regulator for core logic and several on-chip termination resistors, reducing the total bill of material by approximately 30 percent, according to NEC.
The uPD720102 host controller is compliant with the Enhanced Host Controller Interface (EHCI) Rev 1.0 and Open Host Controller Interface (OHCI) Rev 1.0a specifications. It is suitable for PC / Server motherboards, PCI add-in cards, PC Cards, digital TV, STB, HDD recorders, printers, multi-function printers, wireless routers, NAS(Network Attached Storage), and printer servers.
Samples of the uPD720102 host controller are available now for $5 each. Volume production will begin in May and is expected to reach one million units per month by the end of 2006.
