Fremont, Calif.Exar Corp. entered the storage market with a pair of SATA/SAS port multipliers. The XRS10L140 and XRS10L240 are the first in a series of storage devices called Xstor that are designed to improve signal integrity and bandwidth bottlenecks in data management systems.
The XRS10L240 provides the advantages of a SATA II port selector and port multiplier implementations at 1.5-Gbits/s and 3.0-Gbits/s. It delivers port selector and port multiplier functions in one device, enabling two SATA or SAS hosts to address up to four SATA drives.
Its ability to address four SATA devices from one external link with support for a failover path from two independent hosts makes it suitable for a wide variety of applications, such as SATA enclosures and RAID subsystems. The XRS10L240 supports six SATA I/II physical layer ICs on-chip.
The XRS10L140 is a SATA port multiplier designed for next-generation enterprise class disk array systems that use SATA mid-planes. The device is targeted at low-cost storage applications. The XRS10L140 features staggered HDD spin-up, power management control, hot plug capability and support for legacy software. The XRS10L140 device acts as a retimer, maintaining independent signaling domains between the drives themselves and the external interconnect.
Both the XRS10L140 and XRS10L240 are offered in a 100-pin QFP package. In 10,000-piece quantities for commercial temperatures, the XRS10L140 is priced at $9.98 per unit, and the XRS10L240 is priced at $11.98 per unit.
