Dallas, Tex.—Texas Instruments' newest additions to its TPS40K series include four cost-optimized DC/DC buck controllers that are suited to a wide range of applications.
The company's TPS40200 non-synchronous PWM buck controller has an extremely wide input range of 4.5 to 52 volts, with an output voltage that can be adjusted down to 0.7 volt. The TPS40200 features voltage-mode control with voltage feed forward, which simplifies the design of compensation networks. Packaged in a low-pin 8L SOIC, the device includes under-voltage lockout, programmable closed-loop soft-start, and short-circuit protection.
Switching frequency is programmable from 35 to 500 kHz; alternatively, the controller can be synchronized via an external clock. An integrated 200 mA FET driver allows the direct drive of small- and medium-size power FETs.
TI's TPS40041 is a 600-kHz synchronous, voltage-mode PWM controller operating from a 2.25- to 5.5-volt input; the output can be set to as low as 0.59 volt. The buck controller integrates soft-start and short-circuit protection. The TPS40041 comes in a 3-by-3 mm 8L SON package.
The TPS40222 is a 1.25-MHz non-synchronous device with integrated high side FET in a 3-by-3 mm, 6-pin SON package. It works from a 4.5- to 8-volt input; output can be adjusted to as low as 0.8 volt. Its high frequency operation allows for the smallest power supply form factor. The TPS40222 implements current-mode control and a pulse-by-pulse current-limiting feature with frequency foldback to protect the output during fault conditions.
TI also has its 300 kHz TPS40190, a synchronous buck controller with voltage-mode control and adaptive gate drive. It works from a 4.5- to 15-volt input; its output can be set as low as 0.6 volt. The device integrates a linear regulator, which converts the input voltage to an on-chip 5-volt source to power the controller and drivers. The controller features over-current protection, internal soft-start ramping, and a dedicated enable pin.
