Scotts Valley, Calif.Seagate Technology Corp. has unleashed for the desktop and server markets a 750-Gbyte, 3.5-inch disk drive that employs perpendicular recording technology.
The 3.5-inch perpendicular disk drive is part of Seagate's 7200.10 Barracuda family of products that ranges in capacities from 200-Gbytes to 750-Gbytes with data densities of 130-Gbits per square inch (up to 188 Gigabytes per disk).
Barracuda 7200.10 also features cache sizes from 8-Mbytes to 16-Mbytes and 1.5-Gbits/s and 3.0-Gbits/s Serial ATA (SATA) data transfer rates with Native Command Queuing. NCQ enhances reliability in heavy workloads by reducing head movement and streamlining the delivery of queued commands to the drive.
Barracuda 7200.10 features adaptive fly height, which is designed to maximize the consistency of read/write performance across the disk by adjusting the fly height (distance between the disc head and platter) according to changes in environmental operating conditions. It also offers clean sweep, which helps maintain media integrity and drive reliability by passing the drive head over the entire platter during power-on to smooth out any irregularities in the disk surface.
Seagate now delivers perpendicular recording technology across its desktop, notebook, enterprise, consumer electronics and retail hard drives. The technology stands data bits vertically onto the disk media, rather than horizontal to the surface as with traditional longitudinal recording, to deliver higher levels of hard drive data density and capacity.
The drive is backed by Seagate’s 5-year warranty. The Barracuda 7200.10 family is now shipping to the worldwide distribution channel.
MSRP for Barracuda 7200.10, 750GB SATA is $590.
