Lockport, IllinoisData acquisition-board maker KineticSystems rolls out an A/D (analog-to-digital) converter modulewith integrated signal conditioning circuitryin a single-width 6U-sized CompactPCI/PXI (PCI Extensions for Instrumentation) format.
This module is noteworthy for its built-in signal conditioning at its price point. The module has a starting price of about $1275.
KineticSystems's CP213 module provides up to 128 channels of analog input with 16-bit resolution and programmable scan rates from less than 1-sample/s to 100-ksamples/s.
This device joins the company's family of data acquisition and ATE (automated test equipment) wares for cPCI/PXI, VXI (VME Extensions for Instrumentation), and stand-alone data-acq platforms. Typical applications include temperature measurement, powertrain and engine testing, ATE, and general-purpose data acquisition.
Back to the CP213 itself. In operation, it gives you 32 differential analog or 64 differential analog-input channels. These can be configured, under software control, as 64 or 128 single-ended analog-input channels.
Inputs span ±10-V levels. The A/D converter’s integral nonlinearity is specified to be 0.014% FSR (maximum), at gains from 1 through 500, and 0.04% FSR (maximum) at a gain of 1000.
In use, the CP213's 16-bit A/D converter scans each channel at a scan rate that you choose. The number of channels scanned and scan rate are software selectable.
Scans can be triggered from either an internal clock, one of eight PXI backplane triggers, a PXI star trigger bus, or an external SMB connector on the module's front panel. Single and continuous scan operations are supported.
On-Board Signal Conditioning
A key feature of the CP213 is its on-board signal conditioning. It gives you programmable gain that can be set on a channel-by-channel basis.
Gains of unity, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500, and 1000 can be selected. Optional fixed 2-pole passive filters are also available, filtering from 10-Hz to 1-kHz.

Other CP213 features include on-board calibration on each channel for end-to-end calibration, and software controlled temperature measurement; channels 1 and 33 can be configured as isothermal reference channels, for temperature measurement.
In addition to its analog-input channels, the CP213 provides sixteen multi-function TTL digital I/O channels, with pull-up resistors built-in. Any of these can be configured as inputs or outputs, or they can be selectively attached to dual frequency-in, counter-in, and/or timer-out channels.
The CP213 also comes with plug-and-play drivers for configuring and using the module. Application examples are also provided to illustrate basic functions.
