San Jose, Calif.Wireless chip maker Micrel Inc. is offering an efficient and power-managed ISM-band (industrial, scientific, medical) radio transmitter IC for less than $1.50 a pop. Dubbed the MICRF405, it's part of the company's low-power RadioWire line of RFICs (radio frequency ICs).
Characterized for operation from 290-MHz through 980-MHz, the MICRF405 complements Micrel's MICRF505/506 line of transceiver chips.
The MICRF405 covers all four sub-GHz bands. It covers the 315-MHz and 915-MHz bands for North American designs, and the 433-MHz and 868-MHz bands for European designs. The device is FCC Part 15.247-compliant and EN300-220-compliant.
Operable at raw data rates to 200-kbits/s, this device targets designers of high-end RKE (remote keyless entry) systems, as well as those off you designing automatic meter readers, building automation systems, and industrial control circuits.
It can be used in ASK (amplitude shift keying) and simple OOK (on-ff keying) designs. It can also be FSKd (frequency-shift keyed). Micrel says the device addresses the trend of migrating from simple ASK/OOK modulation to FSK devices that run higher output-power and give you longer range.
The company says its chip supports this migration trend, while retaining backwards compatibility with legacy ASK systems. The company also contends this new IC requires fewer external components than competing ICs. It comes in a 4 x 4-mm MLF package.
On-chip hardware includes a PLL (phase-locked loop) frequency synthesizer, and a PSA (power amplifier). The synthesizer consists of a VCO (voltage-controlled oscillator), a PLL lock detect circuit, and a crystal-controlled oscillator. The IC also integrates a dual-modulus prescaler, requisite programmable frequency dividers, and a phase-detector. A loop filter can be internal or external.

The output power of the PA stage can be programmed to eight different levels.

The MICRF405 is sampling now, with volume quantities expected by the second quarter. Development kits are available for all applicable frequency bands.
