Lincoln, Mass.—PMD Corp.'s MC73110 intelligent motor control IC now features field oriented control, i.e., an algorithm for improving efficiency in brushless DC motors and providing higher top-end speed than alternative methods. It's touted as an improvement over traditional Hall-based approaches to provide an advantage in speed over sinusoidal communtation as well as a significant improvement over variable-speed drive techniques.
The MC73110 is a single-axis IC that's designed to deliver a wide range of usable motor speeds along with numerous monitoring and control features. It operates in internal velocity profile mode, velocity mode with an external velocity command signal, or torque mode with an external torque command signal. Designers need just a MOSFET or IGBT three-phase bridge to implement a full-featured drive.
