Sunnyvale, Calif.—Honing in on simplicity and cost-effectiveness, Catalyst Semiconductor's CAT3603, at 78 cents each in 10k quantities, is a fractional charge pump in a 3-by-3 mm TDFN package specifically optimized for high-volume, three-LED backlighting display applications for cellular phones, digital still cameras, and handheld devices.
Users can set LED brightness from 1 to 30 mA per LED with a single (external) resistor. Tightly matched output channels provide accurate illumination for uniform backlighting.
The device's 1x/1.5x fractional charge pump, working from a 3- to 5.5-volt input, maximizes battery life; efficiency is as high as 91 percent. When disabled, the device enters “zero” current shutdown mode. Other features include protection against short-circuits and thermal overloads.
