Colorado Springs, Colorado—EM Microelectronic says its EM6152, EM6152A, and EM6153 are the only system power ICs for automotive applications that incorporate a multi-mode windowed watchdog timer, reset logic, and 5-volt, 400-mA LDO. These circuits are automotive qualified according to AEC-Q100 and can support operation up to 40 volts. Rated for operation over -40 to +125°C, the products are also suited for industrial environments and high-reliability and mission-critical applications.
The EM6152 is similar to the initial member of the family, the EM6151, but with the added regulator. The EM6152A and EM6153 deliver up to 150 mA. The EM6153 includes an inhibit function allowing extremely low power consumption—below 1 microamp when its inhibit function is enabled. The EM615x family also touts increased robustness against ESD and latch-up.
Providing supply-voltage surveillance and watchdog timing surveillance, these chips eliminate the need for redundant microprocessors that supervise each other.
In automotive applications, they serve to monitor the microprocessors that control electronic cockpit security, as well as trunk closure systems, electrical spoiler control, dashboard, sunroof, rear-view mirror, and window controls.
Each chip offers three windowing versions appropriate to the application. Version V53 comes with a large 'open' watchdog window (67 percent of total watchdog window), making it easier for the software programmer to issue a pulse to service the watchdog. Version V50 has a smaller 'open' watchdog window (33 percent), offering increased security. Version V55 offers a controller area network bus (CANbus) sleep mode detector.
In the typical application, the central processor will issue a general sleep instruction to all V55-equipped peripheral modules, thus minimzing the frequency of reset signals and drastically cutting power consumption to various monitoring circuits in the auto that may be on for weeks at a time.
All of the new ICs are available in SO8 packages. The EM6152A/53 is also available in a PSOP-16 "power package." Click here for the EM6152's datasheet, here for the EM6152A's, and here for the EM6153's.
The family is priced starting at $1.20 each for the EM6152, 90 cents for the EM6152A, and $1.13 for the EM6153, all in 1k quantities. Click here for additional information on supervisory ICs.
