El Segundo, Calif.—International Rectifier's POWIR+ chipset reference designs, an enhanced expansion to the company's myPOWER collection of on-line design services, simplify and accelerate the design of single-phase synchronous buck converters appropriate to the power level for computing and high-end consumer applications.
"IR's POWIR+ reference designs use carefully selected power semiconductors, passive components and inductors targeted at specific power levels, and placed on an optimized PCB layout, to deliver predictable electrical and thermal performance," said Carl Smith, marketing manager for Computing and Communications Products. "In contrast to typical evaluation boards, these reference designs mirror real-world circuits as closely as possible, providing meaningful results for complex issues such as board layout, thermal design, and the optimization of device interaction."
The first series of POWIR+ chipsets comprise the IR3637SPbF and IR3637ASPbF application-tuned PWM control ICs and their companion HEXFET MOSFETs. The IRPP3637-06A, IRPP3637-12A and IRPP3637-18A reference designs, available in three power levels of six, 12 and 18 amps, accelerate the design process while eliminating unnecessary design iterations. In addition to the three reference designs, users may modify any of the standard designs on-line (click here) to create custom circuits.
Each of these fully-tested and characterized POWIR+ reference designs is available with a full suite of on-line simulation tools. Simulation capabilities include small- and large-signal analysis, switching waveforms, and performance analysis for all components.
The IRPP3637-06A, using the IRF8910PBf dual SO-8 MOSFET, is optimized for low-current applications requiring reduced size and component count. The IRPP3637-12A (using the IRF7823PbF and IRF7832ZPbF MOSFETs to improve electrical and thermal efficiency), is optimized for medium-current applications. The IRPP3637-18A (IRLR8713PbF and IRLR7843PbF D-Pak MOSFETs) is optimized for medium-to-high-current applications that require high thermal performance while maintaining an emphasis on cost-effectiveness.
When customizing a standard reference design, the user adjusts system-level inputs to effect tradeoffs in key performance criteria such as electrical efficiency, power loss, junction temperature, size and bill-of-materials costs. Once complete, the circuit can be immediately simulated on-line and then ordered as a fully-tested and characterized design. The designs can be customized to operate within an input voltage range of 3 to 13.2 volts, an output voltage range of 0.8 to 5.0 volts, and switching frequencies of 400 or 600 kHz.
The first series of standard POWIR+ chipset reference designs is available now. Customized reference designs are available 1-2 weeks ARO, ordered through the POWIR+ chipset on-line design tool. Pricing for each standard IRPP3637-xxA reference design is $150 in single-unit quantities. Pricing for each customized IRPP3637-xxA reference design is $250 in single-unit quantities.
