Westlake Village, Calif.—Inphi Corporation's 13650DE and 13651DE, which the company says remain the only stand-alone differential phase shift keying (DPSK) and Duobinary encoders in the industry, are now offered in a 3-by-3 mm QFN plastic package to cut cost and footprint significantly and to provide a measure of compatibility with the company's new 13-series flip flops for use in NRZ applications. The encoders, initially announced in an LGA package at a cost of about $225 apiece, operate up to 12.5 Gbps for telecommunications systems and transponders.
These encoders provide better signal integrity and faster rise and fall times for extended-reach applications than integrated solutions, according to Chet Jewan, director of sales and marketing. "The low-cost QFN Differential Encoders meet an important need in the design of modules and line-cards that are flexible enough to meet the complex and continually changing needs of the telecommunications marketplace," adds Kevin Nary, vice president of engineering. For the price sensitive higher volume communications equipment market the QFN family will offer greater price reductions with volume than is possible with metal or ceramic packages.
The chips, which are qualified and are compliant with JESD 47 as well as Telcordia GR-357-Core, feature a choice of a positive (13651DE) or negative (13650DE) 3.3-volt supply to enable reliable interfacing to a variety of logic levels; operation over 1 to 12.5 Gbps with extremely low jitter to ensure flexibility in design and application; and an option for designers to use either single-ended or differential inputs for the clock and data. The chips' 300-degree input phase margin eases design by allowing a large window of timing error for clock and data signals. Fast rise and fall times produce a cleaner and wide-open eye with better signal integrity, according to the company.
The chips' large differential output swing (1.2 volts p-p) enables interfacing to a variety of drivers. These chips are pin-to-pin compatible with the 13600DF and 13601DF flip-flops for NRZ transmission applications.
