Board-level system vendor Kontron America is preparing its ETX miniBaseboard, a compact ETX (embedded technology extended) baseboard designed to enable fast time-to-market for makers of embedded end products, the company said.
Kontron anticipates offering sample ETX miniBaseboard units by early this month, with prices starting at about $234 in small quantities. The product will support all the features of ETX 3.0.
The latest introduction to Kontron's ETX family, measuring 130 x 155 mm, provides customers with an off-the-shelf compact baseboard. The RoHS-compliant ETX miniBaseboard is slightly larger than the ETX modules (95 x 125 mm) with which it pairs. Thus, it can be integrated as a baseboard in almost any embedded application, Kontron said.
Compared with earlier specifications, ETX 3.0 offers 2x serial ATA with no change to the pins for the ETX plug.
The ETX miniBaseboard can also serve as a universal development platform for ETX 3.0 modules, making it backward-compatible with ETX predecessors.
OEMs that don't require additional special features will be able to use the ETX miniBaseboard as a standard product for end applications. Its ETX 3.0 compliance ensures long-term availability, robust construction and a function-tested design that's future-proof.
Along with Kontron, the members of the ETX Industrial Group support the new ETX 3.0 spec. The group is committed to keeping ETX viable until at least 2010, offering a reliable and pure computer-on-module form factor for embedded applications.
All of the interfaces on the compact baseboards will be dedicated, thereby accelerating application testing on a target platform with freely scalable processor performance. Kontron says the result will be a significant reduction of time and expense in developing customer applications.
Communication interfaces will include a 1x 32-bit PCMCIA PC Card slot, 4x USB and a 1 x 32-bit PCI slot.
The product also offers four serial interfaces and 2x Ethernet interfaces, with 10/100/1,000-Mbit and 10/100-Mbit capability. A CompactFlash card slot and two IDE interfaces will also be available, in addition to all conventional ETX features.
