San Diego, Calif.—With the accent on extending battery lifetimes in high-density, low-power portables, Wolfson Microelectronics' WM8956 stereo DAC integrates a Class D amplifier, microphone amp, and headphone output for mobile phone, media player, portable DVD, and game console applications.
The WM8956 touts 0.03 percent total harmonic distortion at 1 watt per channel (capacitorless output) into 8 ohms, and an operating efficiency of 87 percent. SNR is 98 dB. The chip consumes just 10 mW.
Pop and click suppression technology allow direct battery connection to the speaker supply. Flexible speaker boost settings allow the user to maximize output while minimizing other analog supply currents.
Unused functions can be disabled by using software control to save power. The WM8956 supports differential microphone and line inputs specifically for baseband processors in mobile phones as well as offering an analog mixer for stereo and mono inputs and outputs for other applications. It also features built-in 3D audio enhancement.
