Shelton, Conn.TranSwitch Corp. recently teamed up with Fulcrum Microsystems to develop a reference design that they say simplifies the development of 10-Gigabit Ethernet switch systems that feature extended-reach physical connectivity over copper interface using the CX4 interface standard.
The reference design consists of TranSwitch's MY3128 PHY device and Fulcrum's FocalPoint FM2224. TranSwitch's CX-4 retimers connect via XAUI to Fulcrum Microsystem's FocalPoint low-latency switches.
The reference design extends the reach of standard 24-gauge CX4 cable to 30 meters and supports the 30-gauge standard up to 15 meters. It also supports the CX4 specification, which enables the copper cables to be replaced by low-cost optical connections.
The reference design is aimed at providing the performance required in the data center, offering less than 400-ns port-to-port latency.
It is available from Fulcrum or TranSwitch.

The MY3128 is a fully integrated XAUI to CX4 retimer that employs a channel swap capability allowing the user to maintain all high-speed signals on a single PC layer regardless of connector configuration.
The FocalPoint FM2224 is a 10-GbE switch chip with 200-ns of total latency. It features 24 integrated 10-GbE interfaces, each of which can be configured to operate in 10-Gbits/s, 2.5-Gbits/s and 10/100/1000 modes.
The list price for the FM2224 is $450 in 5K quantities. The TranSwitch MY3128 is $33 for 1K quantities.
