Harrisburg, Pa. Tyco Electronics has expanded its rugged PRO BEAM optical interconnect systems with the low-profile PRO BEAM Mini connector that shortens the connector length and reduces its weight by over half as compared with the original PRO BEAM Jr. product.
The PRO BEAM Mini connector was developed for rugged fiber-optic applications that require tightly packaged connections outside the circular standard. This modified design minimizes use of board real estate and meets connection needs in stacked/matrix applications, said the company.
In addition, by incorporating the latest in Expanded Beam (EB) optics technology, the PRO BEAM Mini connector family provides a non-contacting, separable interface for high data rate connections in harsh environments prone to thermal, mechanical, and vibration extremes.
One of the key features of the Expanded Beam technology is that each circular EB insert comes in three geometric shapes large, medium, and miniature-sized interconnections containing one, two, or four fibers. These options make modular use possible so fiber-optic interconnects are more user friendly, field reparable and terminable in harsh environments.
The PRO BEAM connectors use the Expanded Beam technology to collimate a transmission signal into an optical beam over 14 times its original signal diameter and up to 200 times its cross-sectional area for multimode, and up to 45 times its original signal diameter and up to 2000 times its cross-sectional area for single mode.
The blind mating of PRO BEAM connectors promotes resiliency against damage to the fiber connection and signal transmission by sealing and protecting fiber behind a spherical lens. By sealing the fiber ferrules behind 'safety glasses' we have lessened the overall probability of induced failure by dirt/dust ingress into the optical path and expanded the working area of the light beam. This means end users can avoid up to 95% of Maintenance and Repair Operations (MRO) for traditional physical contact designs by utilizing the PRO BEAM connectors, and consequently save the service and applied costs of equipment retrieval and repair of interfaces in the field," said Marc den Hartog, product manager for Tyco, in a statement.
Applications include field deployable communications, oil/gas exploration, geophysical sciences, sporting events and outdoor filming, aerospace, railway and other rugged applications.
A total kit with optic inserts, shell, ferrules, and cable boot in either a plug or receptacle half is priced at approximately $275.00 each in small to medium volumes. Delivery is approximately eight weeks.
