Schaumburg, Ill. Taiyo Yuden (U.S.A.), Inc. said its new 8 x 8 x 4-mm NR8040T series of wirewound power inductors offers 10 x 10-mm performance with a 36 percent smaller footprint. Achieving 3.4 amps at 10 microhenries, the power inductor series is said to be the industry's highest rated current for its size.
Taiyo Yuden offers 13 models (see table below) targeting DC/DC converter choke coil applications in LCD and plasma TVs, automotive navigation systems, home video game consoles, and other devices. The series offers an excellent combination of low DC resistance (0.006 to 0.29 ohms), high inductance (0.9 to 100 microhenries) and high current ratings (1.0 to 11.8 A).
The company was able to achieve the smaller footprint by improving the round drum/sleeve core technology used by conventional inductor designs by developing a sleeveless square-core winding that eliminates wasted space and thickens the lead wire inside the inductor for a low DC resistance (Rdc). The design was driven by growing industry demand for choke coils, the primary component in DC/DC converters, with higher current capacity, lower Rdc and smaller size requirements, said the company.
The NR8040T wirewound inductor series includes the following part numbers:
