Eindhoven, The NetherlandsAimed at portable devices such as smartphones, handheld gaming and GPS modules that need to interface with Bluetooth EDR and wireless modems, NXP Semiconductors has developed four 1.8-V UARTs that are packaged in a TFBGA measuring just 3.5-mm x 3.5-mm.
NXP's SC16C85x 1.8-V UART family consists of four devices. The SC16C850V and SC16C850L are one-channel UARTs, while the SC16C852V and SC16C852L are two-channel UARTs.
The SC16C850V and SC16C852V support the VLIO bus interface specification from Marvell while the NXP SC16C850L and SC16C852L support Intel or Motorola interfaces.
All of the UARTs offer a fractional divider that allows an existing system clock to be used rather than an external crystal.
The SC16C85x devices can support Bluetooth EDR data rates of 3-Mbits/s at 1.8-V since they are capable of data throughput of up to 5-Mbits/s. The 1.8V UART family provides long-distance communications through its automatic RS485 feature and ensures short-range wireless capabilities with its embedded IrDA encoder.
In high volume, the NXP 1.8-V UART family is priced at $1 to sub-$1.
