LAS VEGAS High-definition video IC provider Silicon Image Inc. introduced the first generation of its VastLane transition-minimized differential signaling (TMDS) switches at the 2007 Consumer Electronics Show here Monday (Jan. 8). The company also rolled out a pair of VastLane High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) 1.3 receiver chips.
The TMDS switches, SiI9181 and SiI9185, enable multiple HDMI devices to connect to HDTVs with frequency of operation up to 225MHz and support Deep Color, Silicon Image (Sunnyvale, Calif.) said. The devices provide a cost effective way for HDTV manufacturers to connect new HDMI-enabled devices coming to market, including HD DVD or Blu-ray players, set top boxes, A/V receivers, game consoles, camcorders and digital still cameras, the company said.
The SiI9185 is a three-to-one switch suited for use in the back panel of HDTVs, where consumers would plug in multiple devices, Silicon Image said. The SiI9181 is a one-to-one switch suited for the front or side panel of an HDTV, the company said. The devices include built-in support for the Consumer Electronic Control (CEC) functionality and integrated Extended Display Identification Data (EDID) random access memory (RAM), according to the company.
The VastLane switch family is the first generation of devices from Silicon Image to integrate the EDID RAM, eliminating the need for external EDID Read Only Memory (ROM) for each HDMI port, the company said. The devices feature backward compatibility with DVI 1.0 and offer a very low power standby mode, according to Silicon Image.
"Silicon Image will continue to introduce new, innovative products that help consumer electronics manufactures deliver enhanced functionality in a cost effective manner," said Waheed Rasheed, product marketing manager of consumer electronics products at Silicon Image. "The SiI9181 and SiI9185 enable manufacturers to add valuable new features to HDTVs that improve the consumer's experience through enjoyment of premium high definition content in a simple and straight forward manner."
The VastLane SiI9181 one-to-one switch is available immediately and is priced at $1.39 per unit in 10,000 unit quantities, Silicon Image said. The VastLane SiI9185 three-to-one switch is priced at $1.61 per unit in 10,000 unit quantities, according to the company.
