Austin, TexasThe folks at National Instruments (NI) continue to crank out test-and-measurement innovations. NI is now expanding its line of DMMs (digital multimeters) with low-cost 6-1/2-digit instruments for conventional PCI bus systems, as well as PCIe (PCI Express) platforms. These DMMs complement NI's existing 407x series of 6-1/2-digit and 7-1/2-digit FlexDMMs. DMM pricing starts at under $1300.
NI's latest PCIe-4065 DMM, for example, is billed by the company as the first-ever DMM for the PCI Express bus. Its counterpart, the PCI-based PCI-4065 offers measurements of DC or AC voltage and current, and both 2-wire and 4-wire resistance measurement capability.
These DMMs also make diode tests, offer ±300-V DC/rms isolation, and can make current measurements up to 3-A. These DMMs offer 6-1/2 digit resolution at up to ten readings/s, and up to 3000-readings/s at lower resolution.
The -4065 DMMs also rely heavily on NI's software. For example, NI-DMM Soft Front Panel software, and DMM/Switch Express VI software, let you either mimic benchtop DMM displays or build high channel-count data-logging systems; you can do that in short order using NI SignalExpress software.
For automated test systems, NI's 4065 Series DMMs are also compatible with NI TestStand, LabVIEW, Labwindows/CVI, and Measurement Studio.
High Channel-Count Logging
You can also integrate these DMMs with stand-alone switching, using the 4-slot or 12-slot USB (Universal Serial Bus) switching mainframes, available from NI. You can configure these switch systems, controllable from any available USB port on your PC or laptop, with more than 50 available SCXI switch topologies.
For existing SCXI switch systems, the 4065 DMMs can also provide control via an auxiliary connector on their front panels. Switching offers a simple method of channel expansion for data-logging systems.
