Etters, Pa. FCI has developed press-fit, card-edge connectors for MicroTCA applications. The press-fit versions extend the use of the MicroTCA architecture to thicker backplanes where their larger size and complexity aren't supported by standard surface-mount reflow soldering processes.
The vertical card-edge connectors provide 170 contacts on 0.75-mm pitch and enable AMC cards to be plugged directly to a backplane, accommodating speeds up to 10 Gbits/s. All mezzanines conforming to the AMC standard fit directly into a MicroTCA shelf without modification.
FCI connectors are in full compliance with the MicroTCA specification. The press-fit version accommodates application on very large and thick backplanes, and the existing SMT version is suitable for application on smaller backplanes using a conventional SMT reflow soldering process. Metal retention clips on the SMT connectors provide additional mechanical strength after soldering.
The MicroTCA specification creates a physically small but very powerful system in 4U height and 300-mm depth. The reduced size and cost are suitable for a wide range of applications such as core routers, IP gateways, base stations, switching centers, and customer premises equipment.
The system architecture reduces size and cost by eliminating the ATCA carrier board and providing a chassis that accepts AMC modules directly. MicroTCA shelves will also support hot-pluggable modules, which will increase availability by allowing individual modules to be serviced or upgraded without taking the shelf offline.
