Raleigh, N.C. Stackpole Electronics Inc. introduces two series of through-hole ferrite bobbin inductors. The DRGH and DRGR power inductors feature a wide range of inductance values with tight tolerances and low DC resistance.
The DRGH series is a non-shielded power choke available in values from 10 uH to 47,000 uH. The DRGH inductors are rated for current up to 5.3 A, and offer DC resistance as low as 50 milliohms. The DRGR series is magnetically shielded and available in values from 10 uH to 10,000 uH with current ratings up to 3.9 A.
Both the DRGH and DRGR series are available in diameters between 6 mm and 10 mm. The larger part sizes have four leads instead of two to enhance mechanical integrity. They are also said to offer significant cost and space savings over comparable toroid inductors.
In addition, the larger sizes of the DRGH and DRGR enable them to handle large currents with low saturation losses, and to efficiently transfer heat away from the part to minimize susceptibility to overheating, which is a common cause of power inductor failures.
The precise control of core materials creates the exceptionally large range of values and contributes to the ability of the DRGH and DRGR inductors to achieve tolerances as tight as 5%, said the company. Both series are DIP power inductors, but the DRGR features a ferrite sleeve to shield nearby components from electromagnetic interference (EMI).
Bobbin-style inductors are a popular choice for applications such as PCs and high-power/high-frequency power supplies that require both noise attenuation and protection of sensitive components. The single layer of windings generates very low parasitic capacitance, making both series efficient power chokes. In addition, the variety of sizes and surge capability make them suitable for a number of battery-operated devices such as electronic testing equipment and higher power portable electronic devices.
Pricing: The DRGH inductor is typically priced at $.138 to $.161, and DRGR is priced at approximately $.185 to $.219.
