Targeting higher resistances in applications that require operation in high moisture environments, Stackpole Electronics, Inc. has expanded its RNCS series of passivated nichrome precision SMD resistors that performs as well in high humidity environments as more costly tantalum nitride SMD chips.
The expanded resistance ranges for .1% tolerance and 25 ppm temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) ratings are as follows:
- RNCS 16 (0603): 25 ohms to 332 Kohms
- RNCS 20 (0805): 25 ohms to 800 Kohms
- RNCS 32 (1206), RNCS 57 (2010), and RNCS 63 (2512): 25 ohms to 1 Megohm
The RNCS uses several materials, design, and process improvements compared to standard nichrome thin-film precision chip resistors, said the company. For example, an additional process is performed to achieve a substrate that is 30% smoother than typical substrates for this type of product. In addition, the resistive material has an additional element added to reduce its susceptibility to moisture corrosion, and an additional glass passivation is added prior to the final epoxy passivation to ensure isolation from even the most humid environments.
The RNCS series is suitable for a variety of precision applications in non-climate controlled environments, including industrial controls and power supplies, meters, instrumentation, data and voice communications equipment and servers, and HVAC. The RNCS resistors are lead free and RoHS compliant.
Pricing: The RNCS series is available in tape and reel packaging in standard package quantities with price ranges from $12.00 per thousand to $250.00 per thousand depending on TCR and tolerance.
Availability: Standard lead time is six to eight weeks with samples available in three to four weeks.
