Schaumburg, Ill. The BRL2518 series of wirewound power inductors from Taiyo Yuden (U.S.A.) Inc. offers a 50% smaller footprint with the same 1.2-mm height as the previous model. Measuring 2.5 x 1.8 mm, the BRL2518 series also maintains a high-rated current and low RDC.
Available in five models (see table), the BRL2518 series offers low DC resistance (RDC)of 0.08 to 0.4 ohms, high inductance from 1.0 to 4.7 uH and high current ratings of 1.6 to 0.7 A. With the equivalent performance of larger devices, the 50% smaller footprint of the BRL2518 series enables the design of more compact DC/DC converters and thinner-profile products. These devices are suitable for DC/DC converter choke coil applications in hard disk drives, LCD displays, digital cameras, personal digital assistants and other devices.
Taiyo Yuden said it was able to reduce the size of the wirewound inductor and maintain performance characteristics size reductions typically result in increased resistance by improving the round drum/sleeve core technology used by conventional inductor designs. It developed a unique sleeveless square-core winding that eliminated all wasted space and thickened the lead wire inside the inductor to achieve the lowest possible DC resistance.
The BRL2518 wire-wound inductor product line-up presently includes the following part numbers:
