San Jose, CAAtmel® Corporation has started sampling of the latest member of its ARM9-based Flash microcontroller family, the AT91SAM9XE512, that combines a 200-MIPS ARM926EJ-S processor core with 512K bytes of high-speed on-chip Flash. Pin-compatible with the SAM9260, the new device is designed to provide performance, connectivity, firmware flexibility, and security.
In addition to the on-chip 512K byte Flash, the SAM9XE512 features 8K bytes of instruction cache, 8K bytes of data cache, 32K bytes of internal SRAM and 32K bytes of internal ROM, all accessible at maximum matrix speed. The embedded Flash memory combines a 128-bit wide bus with 40ns read access time.
It can be programmed in-system via the JTAG-ICE interface or through a parallel interface on a production programmer prior to mounting. Built-in lock bits and a security bit protect the firmware from accidental or deliberate overwrite and preserve its confidentiality. In addition the SAM9XE512 features an external bus interface (EBI) with dedicated controllers for SDRAM, static RAM, ECC-enabled NAND Flash and CompactFlash. The EBI also connects external memory-mapped devices such as FPGAs.
The six-layer system bus matrix is linked to the Memory Management Unit of the processor core, as well as to distributed DMA channels on the USB host, Ethernet and image sensor interface to ensure uninterrupted internal data flows with minimum processor overhead. This concept is extended to peripherals via the peripheral DMA controller (PDC) that communicates with DMA interfaces on the USB Device and all other serial I/Os. This distributed DMA architecture enables the SAM9XE to perform complex data processing at the same time as high-speed data transfers.
The SAM9XE provides multiple networking/connectivity options with on-chip USB 2.0 full-speed host and device ports, an Ethernet 10/100 Base-T MAC as well as a two-slot Multimedia Card Interface (SDCard/SDIO and MultiMediaCard Compliant), a Synchronous Serial Controller (SSC), four USARTs, two master/slave Serial Peripheral Interfaces (SPI), a debug UART and two Two Wire Interfaces (TWI).
The AT91SAM9XE shares development tools and operating system support from industry-leading third parties with all other members of the AT91SAM family. The AT91SAM9XE512 is sampling now, in a 208-pin PQFP Green or 217-ball LFBGA Green Package.
