Orlando, Fla.Skyworks Solutions Inc. has developed a 2.5-GHz front-end module (FEM) dubbed the SKY77258 for Mobile WiMAX handsets and terminals, including smart phones, notebooks and PDAs.
Mobile WiMAX, a wireless digital communications system also known as IEEE 802.16e, is intended for wireless "metropolitan area networks," providing broadband wireless access up to 30 miles (50 km) for fixed stations, and three - ten miles (5 - 15 km) for mobile stations.

The SKY77258 WiMAX FEM integrates all of the necessary functionsfrom the transceiver's differential inputs and outputs to the antenna with fully-matched 50-ohm RF ports to yield what it claims are industry-leading form factors and easy integration.
The power amplifier (PA) is fabricated using Skyworks' indium gallium phosphide (InGaP) heterojunction bipolar transistor (HBT) technology, while the switch employs Skyworks' pseudomorphic high electron mobility transistor (pHEMT) technology.
The PA, switch, coupler, detector, controller, baluns, low noise amplifiers (LNAs), and matching components are packaged in a 36-pin, 8-mm x 10-mm multi-chip module.
The FEM provides a linear Pout of 24 decibels (dBm) at the switch output, together with a P1dB of over 35dBm to support the high peak-to-average ratio needed for multi-carrier WiMAX signals.
Skyworks offers all of this functionality in lead (Pb)-free restriction of hazardous substances (RoHS) compliant packaging.
Skyworks will be showcasing its portfolio of Intera FEMs and Helios radio products in Booth 4155 at CTIA Wireless 2007, being held March 27-29 in Orlando.
