Santa Clara, Calif. Catalyst Semiconductor, Inc. has announced two additions to its recently released low dropout (LDO) regulator product line. The CAT6217 and CAT6218 LDO regulators source 150 mA and 300 mA output currents, respectively, in a five-lead, 1-mm profile SOT-23 package.
The CAT6217 and CAT6218 are alternatives to LDO regulators from National Semiconductor, Micrel, Maxim and others. These devices offer a low quiescent current combined with a low typical dropout voltage of 90 mV at a 150 mA load for the CAT6217 and 180 mV at a 300 mA load for the CAT6218.
In addition, an external bypass capacitor reduces overall output noise making the devices suitable for low noise applications. Many LDOs incorporating a bypass capacitor pay the penalty of slow "start up", however; Catalyst explained the CAT6217 and CAT6218 LDO products are designed with a "quick start" feature to ensure a fast turn-on time of less than 150 us, further optimizing the devices for low-power applications.
The CAT6217 and CAT6218 eliminate battery drain when not in use by entering a "zero" current shutdown mode. They also offer a low typical quiescent current of 55 uA and protection against short-circuit and thermal overload fault conditions.
The CAT6217 is available in output voltages of: 1.5 V, 1.8 V, 2.5 V, 2.8 V, 2.85 V and 3.3 V. The CAT6218 offers output voltages of: 1.8 V, 2.4 V, 2.7 V, 2.85 V, 3.0 V, 3.2 V and 3.3 V.
Pricing: The CAT6217 LDO regulator is priced at $0.20 each and the CAT6218 is priced at $0.23 each, both in quantities of 10,000.
