Santa Clara, Calif. Catalyst Semiconductor, Inc. has launched its CAT3604V Quad-Mode fractional charge pump LED driver. This four-channel LED driver provides an alternative to the industry-standard '604 with similar functionality and Catalyst's Quad-Mode switching architecture that delivers improved average efficiency.
The Quad-Mode technology delivers the high efficiency levels typically associated with inductor-based LED drivers, while eliminating the associated high-profile inductors and unwanted EMI, said Catalyst. The Quad-Mode architecture adds a fourth mode of operation at 1.33x (to the typical three modes of 1x, 1.5x and 2x) to deliver higher average efficiency, without the need for an additional capacitor. It achieves 1.33x boost mode with two flying capacitors. The 1.33x fractional operating mode also reduces the input switching currents seen at the battery, minimizing the overall supply noise.
The CAT3604V delivers power efficiency of up to 92 percent, and drives up to four LEDs at 25 mA each. The device also features a PWM dimming interface and channel diagnostics, which include automatic detection for both short and open LED channel conditions to ensure the device maintains the highest efficiency level in all operating modes. The device is packaged in a 4 x 4-mm, 16-pad TQFN.
