Fremont, Calif. Exar Corp. has announced the latest addition to its PowerBlox family of high-efficiency, step-down switching regulators with the introduction of the SP7656 3-A (4-A peak) non-synchronous buck regulator. Housed in an 8-lead surface-mount power package, the SP7656 is the first in a new series of reduced footprint non-synchronous PowerBlox devices, with integration of Type-II compensation.
This regulator is well-suited for systems deriving power off loosely regulated secondaries from isolated supplies commonly used in industrial systems, as well as intermediate bus voltages used in telecom systems. Other target applications include set-top-boxes (PVR/DVR), xDSL CPE equipment, digital televisions, and related systems.
The SP7656 dc/dc regulator combines operation over a wide input range of 4.5 V to 29 V with extended low-output voltage capability (0.6 V), making it suitable as a 5-V, 12-V or 24-V intermediate supply generator and a low-voltage point-of-load power supply. Input feed forward control provides excellent transient response while regulation accuracy is achieved through a 1% accurate reference.
The low-output voltage capability also makes the SP7656 suitable for a highly accurate sub-1 V core supply voltage for sub-micron ASIC, DSP and FPGA devices, typically utilizing a 5-V or 3.3-V system bus as the point-of-load regulation input bus.
Other features include adjustable over-current protection, adjustable soft start, under-voltage lockout, 1% set point accuracy, and high-speed 600 kHz switching frequency. The SP7656 is available in an 8-pin SOIC RoHS-compliant, lead-free package compatible with JEDEC reflow cycle specifications for lead-free process.
