Austin, Tex.— Freescale Semiconductor has added its MC34700 quad-output power supply IC to its portfolio of power management chips optimized for space-constrained high-voltage and high-power applications.
The wide-input MC34700 IC, which works off a 9-18 volt source and operates at 800 kHz, is suited for set-top boxes, cable modems, laser printers, fax machines, point-of-sale terminals, small appliances, telecom line cards, and DVD players. It includes three switching regulators (two synchronous and one non-synchronous), and one low-dropout (LDO) regulator.

The device, with internal power MOSFETs on all outputs, can deliver up to 1.5 amps continuous on channel 1, up to 1.25 amps continuous on channels 2 and 3, and 400 mA continuous on channel 4.
Features include internal soft-start, voltage feedforward operation on channel 1, ±1.5 percent output voltage accuracy on all channels, cycle-by-cycle current limiting and short-circuit protection, and under-voltage, over-voltage, and over-temperature protection. The device also includes an open-drain power-good output signal, and separate active-high enable input for each channel.
