Malvern, Pa. Aimed at high-reliability applications, Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. has introduced the oil-filled, hermetically-sealed VHP203 ultra-high-precision Z-Foil resistor. Touted as an industry breakthrough, the hermetic sealing eliminates the ingress of moisture and oxygen, while the oil acts as a thermal conductor, thus eliminating the long-term degradation experienced by elements in unsealed resistors, while at the same time allowing the device to accept short periods of overload without degradation, Vishay said.
The miniature VHP203 device provides a low absolute temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) of ±0.05 ppm/°C from 0°C to +60°C and ±0.2 ppm/°C from -55°C to +125°C, +25°C Ref; a power coefficient of ±5 ppm at rated power, and a tolerance of ±0.001% (10 ppm).
Other key specifications include a load-life stability ±0.002% for 2000 hours at +60°C at 0.1 W, a power rating of 0.3 W at +25°C, a low voltage coefficient of <0.1 ppm/V, current noise of <-40 dB, and thermal EMF of 0.05 uV/°C. The resistor offers a fast rise time of 1.0 ns without ringing and features a non-inductive (<0.08 uH), non-capacitive design.
The device can withstand electrostatic discharges exceeding 25 kV for increased reliability. Within a resistance range of 10Ω to 150 kΩ, any value at any tolerance is available through calibration at no additional cost.
Based on Vishay's "Z-Foil" technology, which provides a significant reduction of the resistive component's sensitivity to ambient temperature variations (TCR) and applied power changes (PCR), in combination with an accuracy of ±0.001% and long-term shelf life of 2 ppm for at least 10 years, the new device is optimized for high-precision instrumentation amplifiers, bridge networks, and differential amplifiers in high-accuracy products where humidity resistance and high stability are required. Typical end products include laboratory, metrology, measurement, medical, and test equipment.
