Malvern, Pa. Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. has introduced the VSMP0603 ultra-high-precision, Bulk Metal Z-Foil (BMZF) wraparound surface-mount resistor. The device is touted as the industry's first in the 0603 chip size to offer a military-grade absolute temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) of ±0.2 ppm/°C over the temperature range of -55°C to +125°C, +25°C ref., a tolerance of ±0.01%, and an 1-ns rise time without ringing.
While typical 0603 resistors offer a load-life stability of ≥0.1% through a 1000-hour workload, the VSMP0603 device features an improved load-life stability of ±0.005% at +70°C for 2000 hours at rated power.
The new resistor features a full wraparound termination that ensures safe handling during the manufacturing process, as well as provides stability during multiple thermal cycling. The VSMP0603 offers resistance values from 100Ω to 4 kΩ, and like all Vishay Foil resistors, can be manufactured with any resistance value within the given resistance range without impacting cost or lead time. The device is rated for power levels up to 50 mW at +70°C and can withstand electrostatic discharges (ESD) in excess of 25 kV
The VSMP0603 is built to handle unconventional environmental conditions with minimal drift, making it well suited for military/space applications according to EEE-INST-002 specifications and MIL-PRF 55342. The resistors' construction guarantees a high level of reliability, stable operation in harsh conditions, and high resistance to thermal shock, mechanical shock, and vibrations, Vishay said.
In addition to its low TCR, tight tolerance, and excellent load life stability values, the VSMP0603 offers a power coefficient of resistance (PCR) of ±5 ppm at rated power, a low voltage coefficient of <0.1 ppm/V, and current noise of <-42 dB. The resistor provides a fast thermal stabilization and a non-inductive (<0.08 uH), non-capacitive design. The device is available with standard tin/lead or lead-free terminations.
Typical applications include dc-to-dc converters, feedback and sense circuits, and high precision amplifiers in test and measurement instrumentation, satellites and aerospace systems, commercial and military avionics, audio systems, down-hole drilling instrumentation, weigh scales, electron beam applications, as well as laboratory, industrial, and medical systems.
